About the Program

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a unique masters degree in mathematics and statistics as well as a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics.

Ph.D. Program

The Ph.D. program in Applied Mathematics prepares students for careers in academia, industry, or government. Students will receive expert guidance in research and a foundation in teaching pedagogy.

M.S. Program

The goal of this program is to prepare individuals for professional careers in areas that make use of mathematical and statistical techniques. Special emphasis will be given to those areas that blend mathematical analysis with statistics or probability. Some typical areas are stochastic processes, financial mathematics, computational sciences, biostatistics and data mining.

Degree Requirements

Ph.D. Program
  • Students are required to complete nine courses (27 credits), not including credits associated with dissertation research. These are normally taken in the first two years and include the four core courses to be taken in the first year.
  • Students must pass the comprehensive examinations, which focus on the core courses and are offered once per year in late August. Students must attempt the comprehensive examinations in the year following matriculation, and must pass them by the end of their second year.
  • Students start working on their dissertation after passing the comprehensive examinations, completing the 27 credits course requirements, and forming their dissertation committee.
M.S. Program
  • Students are required to complete a minimum of 30 credit hours. There is no thesis requirement, and there are no qualifying or comprehensive exams.
  • Each student must take four required courses and five elective courses in mathematics and statistics and is expected to take one non-math elective that will expose them to issues and methods in that area.
