Graduate Studies Wrapped: Seeing 2025 Through the Eyes of Georgetown’s Graduate Community

In December, signs of the season come to life across Georgetown: Bundled-up grad students stroll to the library with class notes in tow and visions of winter break dancing in their heads. Washington, DC’s first snowflakes of the school year glide in the wind and nestle on twinkling wreaths and fir trees displayed around campus.

And on news feeds and social apps, year-in-review slideshows abound and remind us of the journeys we’ve taken in 2025. What better way for our graduate community to share in this reflective spirit than with some of our favorite stories from the year?

In 2025, Georgetown’s Graduate Community…

Celebrated the Newest Class of Grad Hoya Alumni

Students smile as they line up to take their seats at Commencement 2025.

In May, 922 students from Georgetown’s Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, including Biomedical Graduate Education, crossed Healy Lawn’s Commencement stage and entered a new era of their professional and academic careers.

Commencement speaker Rev. Luis Arriaga Valenzuela, S.J., cheered them on with galvanizing words of encouragement.

Grew on Capitol Campus

University leaders speak at the ribbon cutting for the 111 Mass Ave. building.

Georgetown celebrated the opening of its new educational hub at 111 Massachusetts Ave. in downtown Washington, DC, on the university’s Capitol Campus.

The state-of-the-art space hosts graduate programs within the School of Continuing Studies, the Earth Commons Institute, the McDonough School of Business, the Berkley School of Nursing and the School of Health.

Drove Groundbreaking Research

Dr. Vaughn Shirey receives the Harold N. Glassman Distinguished Dissertation Award from Dr. Alex Sens as his mentor, Dr. Leslie Ries, looks on.

The Graduate Research Steering Committee named a record-breaking number of recent doctoral graduates recipients of the annual Harold N. Glassman Distinguished Dissertation Award.

The award honors research in the humanities, social sciences and sciences at Georgetown. The high caliber of 2025’s science nominations merited two winners in that division.

Lived Georgetown’s Jesuit Values

Fr. Taroh Amédé smiles outside a church near Georgetown's Capitol Campus.

Fr. Taroh Amédé (G’27) presides over Mass on Georgetown’s Capitol Campus on Sundays. During the week, his head is buried in a different topic: emergency and disaster management.

While pursuing his master’s at Georgetown’s School of Continuing Studies, Amédé discovered that emergency management not only makes him a better leader — it makes him a better Jesuit.

Helped New Grad Hoyas Feel at Home

A collage of grad students in military fatigues.

Over 1,500 military-connected students attend Georgetown. Many of these students are current or former service members who use military educational benefits to earn a master’s degree.

Meet three grad students and service members who have been inspired to contribute to the robust support they found at Georgetown by connecting fellow student-veterans to military-affiliated university resources, student organizations and other support systems around campus and beyond.

Of course, it’s impossible to encapsulate an entire year of learning and growth in one article. We invite you to browse the Graduate Studies Newsroom archives and follow @GradGeorgetown on your preferred social media platforms to find more Grad Hoya stories year-round.

Georgetown Graduate Studies wishes our entire community a happy holiday season and best wishes in the New Year!
