Call for Faculty: Join the Graduate Research Steering Committee

The Graduate Research Steering Committee is currently accepting new members. This faculty committee reviews applications from graduate students, and in some cases postdoctoral fellows, on internal competitions and external submissions requiring institutional nomination or endorsement. Tenure-track, tenured, or FTNTL faculty are eligible.

Each committee member is asked to serve a two-year term (September 1, 2020-May 31, 2022), with individual members called upon to serve as reviewers for internal programs once or twice per semester, depending on the availability of funds; graduate student teaching awards in late winter/early spring; and institutional limited submissions as needed. In some cases, the full committee may be called upon to review a special program, policy change, or institutional proposal. The workload is manageable, and I do my best to spread out the assignments so that no one is overburdened. With the current travel moratorium, our internal travel grants have been put on hold so the fall 2020 workload will be lighter than usual.

In past years, the Committee has reviewed applications for funding opportunities ranging from external awards like the ARCS Scholar Awards and the Edwin J. Beinecke, Jr. Scholarship for International Studies to internal awards such as the Harold N. Glassman Distinguished Dissertation Awards and GradGov Research Project Awards. Students across the university apply for these opportunities, so we are looking for diversity in disciplinary representation among members.
