Henry Schadwinkel (G’27) spent much of three years at the University of Oregon incognito, capering around campus in a duck costume.
Schadwinkel earned his wings as the Oregon Duck, one of the most recognizable mascots in college athletics, while pursuing his bachelor’s degree in planning, public policy and management. For Schadwinkel, days spent in classrooms and study halls turned to nights and weekends under football stadium floodlights.
“[It was] the most rewarding experience of my lifetime,” Schadwinkel said. “It was a combination of unforgettable memories, personal and professional growth and lifelong friendships.”
Schadwinkel shed the mascot’s jaunty cap and necktie in June upon his graduation, but he carries the duck’s collegial spirit with him as he starts his M.A. in American Government at Georgetown this fall.

What motivated you to pursue a master’s degree?
I see earning a master’s degree as an opportunity to dive deeper in subjects that fascinate me while refining my writing and technical skills to elevate my future contributions in the workforce.
What made you choose Georgetown for your master’s?
I chose Georgetown because it uniquely offered me the opportunity to collaborate with equally motivated peers, learn from industry-renowned leaders, and strongly position myself for a career in the heart of American politics.
What are you most looking forward to during your master’s program?
I’m most looking forward to building lasting relationships with my cohort, the Georgetown collective and the DC community.

What advice would you give to others going through the graduate school application process?
I’d advise anyone preparing a graduate school application to start preparing materials and researching programs sooner than you otherwise might. The more time you dedicate to the process, the greater the likelihood of a positive outcome — whatever form that may take.
What are your hobbies outside of school?
I enjoy live music, trying new food, exploring the outdoors and staying fit. I’m equally drawn to city nightlife as I am to a movie or game night with friends. And of course, I’m a die-hard sports fan.
