Meet Abigail Obafemi (G’29): Originally from Kogi State, Nigeria, Obafemi is joining the Ph.D. in German program this fall through the College of Arts & Sciences.

Obafemi joins Georgetown from the University of North Texas, where she worked as a lecturer for the past year. She holds a master’s degree in German literature from the University of Alabama.

What motivated you to pursue a graduate degree?

Through my experiences studying and teaching German, I’ve seen how language acquisition can shape pedagogy, inform intercultural communication and contribute to both academic and real-world language-learning settings. My decision to pursue a Ph.D. stems from an interest to deepen my knowledge and to contribute to research that can influence teaching practices, policy and cross-cultural understanding.

Why did you choose Georgetown?

Georgetown stood out from my other Ph.D. offers for its strong interdisciplinary approach. I think the university’s location in DC also provides an added dimension to my experience — I will be studying language at an institution deeply connected to global affairs, diplomacy and multicultural communities.

What are you most looking forward to during your time here?

I look forward to working closely with renowned faculty. I’m also really excited to be a part of the vibrant multicultural DC atmosphere as I build networks and friendships with students across disciplines.

What advice would you give others going through the grad school application process?

The grad school application process can feel really daunting, with essays to draft and deadlines to juggle. My advice is keep trying and keep putting yourself out there. Keep in mind that rejections do not reflect your worth and the reward of finding the right academic home is far greater than the hurdles it takes to get there.

What are your hobbies outside of school?

In my free time, you’ll find me watching Tiktok videos, baking a vanilla cake or Nigerian meat pies or just watching a good Netflix show or movie.
