Incoming Student Spotlight: Jennifer Ayarkwa, Latin American Studies
After nearly four years of teaching, Jennifer Ayarkwa (G’28) is returning to the classroom on the student side this fall.
Ayarkwa, from Columbus, Ohio, is joining the Master of Arts in Latin American Studies program at the Walsh School of Foreign Service with a concentration in History, Culture, and Society. She brings experience studying abroad in Spain and teaching English in Spain and North and South America to the program, which is focused on growing students’ cultural, political and linguistic competency around issues affecting the Latin American region.

“As a teacher, I really valued active learning rather than passive listening,” Ayarkwa said. “I’m looking forward to finding creative ways to think and learn again.”
Ayarkwa graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Ohio University in 2022. In 2025, she completed a 10-month stint teaching English in Cali, Colombia through The Fulbright Program.

What motivated you to pursue a master’s degree?
After teaching English both abroad (in Las Pedroñeras, Spain, and Cali, Colombia) and domestically in Ohio, I decided I wanted to do something that will challenge me, contribute to my growth and ultimately give me a better future.
What made you choose Georgetown for your master’s?
The Latin American Studies master’s program at Georgetown aligns perfectly with my career goals and academic interests. My interests are niche (education and diplomacy) and I’m still figuring out exactly what I want to do, but there are so many paths that I can go down within those fields. I believe this program was made for me and will lead me to exactly where I am meant to be next!
What are you most looking forward to during your master’s program?
I am looking forward to everything that will be new for me: a new city and new opportunities, academic content, people and adventures.
What advice would you give to others going through the graduate school application process?
Don’t let imposter syndrome stop you from applying to programs! If you don’t knock on the door, you’ll never know what opportunities are behind it.
What are your hobbies outside of school?
I enjoy salsa dancing, practicing film photography, scrapbooking and traveling when I can.
