Incoming Student Spotlight: Kaiyan Shi, Biostatistics

What would motivate a graduate student to attend the same program, at the same university, for both their master’s and Ph.D.? Ask Kaiyan Shi (G’25, G’30), a December 2025 graduate of the master’s in biostatistics program who is returning to Georgetown this fall for his Ph.D. in biostatistics.
“Georgetown’s biostatistics department has phenomenal research resources and a strong reputation,” Shi said. “Since I’ve already built great relationships with mentors here during my master’s, staying for a Ph.D. felt like the perfect, seamless transition to take my research further.”
From Xinzhou, China, Shi earned his bachelor’s degree from Renmin University of China in Beijing. Get to know this returning Grad Hoya and hear what makes Georgetown’s graduate community special to him.
What motivated you to pursue a Ph.D. after your master’s?
Even before starting my master’s, I already knew I wanted to pursue a Ph.D. My time in the master’s program only made that decision stronger, as it made me realize how much I want to dive deeper into the field and master more advanced, detailed knowledge.
What are you most looking forward to during your Ph.D. program?

I’m really looking forward to the transition from just taking classes to actually leading my own research projects. It’s exciting to think about proposing my own ideas and seeing where they can go over the next few years.
What makes you proud to be part of Georgetown’s graduate community?
Everyone here is doing such fascinating work, but they are also incredibly down-to-earth and willing to help each other out. It’s just a very welcoming and collaborative environment to grow in.
What advice would you give to others going through the graduate school application process?
Don’t be afraid to reach out to professors whose work genuinely interests you — most of them are much happier to chat than you’d think! Also, just be yourself and let your real interest in the field show in your statements.

What are your hobbies outside of school?
I love traveling and exploring new places, and I’m always excited to try out different kinds of food and local restaurants. To balance all the eating and sitting in front of a computer, I also love hitting the gym for strength training to stay active.
