Announcing the 2021 ARCS Scholars!
Georgetown University is pleased to have three doctoral students named as ARCS Chapter Scholars for the 2021-2022 academic year. The Metropolitan Washington Chapter of the ARCS Foundation has played a vital role in sustaining and enhancing scientific study at the university through its generous support of graduate education and research in the STEM fields since 1973. These awards provide ,000 per year to doctoral students engaged in rigorous scientific study leading to the completion of a research-based dissertation. Congratulations to the students listed below!
Devin Palmer, PhD Candidate in Neuroscience
Mentor: Dr. Patrick Forcelli
Research Summary: “I aim to understand the “road map” by which seizures spread in the brain. Using high spatial and temporal resolution methods, I will record, target and manipulate neuronal activity within defined regions of the brain to influence seizure initiation, propagation and cessation.”
Raneen Rahhal, PhD Candidate in Tumor Biology
Mentor: Dr. Gray Pearson
Research Summary: “Integrating high-throughput and spatial technologies to discover interactions between tumors cells and the microenvironment that promote metastasis. This new discovery approach will illuminate our understanding of tumor evolution and has the potential to identify new drug targets for the treatment of patients with metastatic cancer.”
Joel Swanson, PhD Candidate in Chemistry
Mentor: Dr. Sarah Stoll
Research Summary: “The europium chalcogenides (EuO, EuS, EuSe and EuTe) are intrinsic magnetic semiconductors that have highly coupled magnetic, electronic and optical properties. Investigation of this coupling on the nanoscale is key to the integration of exciting properties such as spin filtering and magnetoresistance into the next generation of electronics.”
