Georgetown's Department of Cell Biology is focused on preparing students to become highly productive scientists, well acquainted with fundamental concepts and problems of biological organization.
Research is the key activity of our graduate students and their entire program of study focuses on this. In anticipation of laboratory work, students spend the first year acquiring a thorough grounding in the basic sciences. During this time, they are also introduced to the variety of laboratory settings in the department by participating in laboratory projects with faculty members. These projects can be grouped roughly in the areas of cell biology, reproductive and developmental biology and tumor biology.
Research activities also span a broad range of biological problems, from the molecular to the organismal level. Thus, students might participate in such things as gene cloning, purification of proteins, preparation of monoclonal antibodies, computer analysis of light or electron micrographs, biochemical or immunological 'dissection' of cell systems or electrophysiological recording from single cells or cell groups.
Considering their interests, students concentrate their research efforts on an original problem of biological significance and are taught to make use of a wide spectrum of techniques, classic and modern, appropriate to the problem on which they are working.

The 500-word academic statement of purpose should describe your academic and professional goals and their fit with the biomedical graduate program.

- Thirty-two graduate level credits, or two semesters of graduate level courses (students entering with an advanced degree may require fewer credit hours)
- All students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0
- Students must participate in cell biology journal clubs and seminars throughout their graduate tenure
- Completion of three laboratory rotations within one year of admission
- Completion of a qualifying examination, consisting of both written and oral components, within two years of admission
- Preparation and defense of a dissertation proposal within three years of admission
- Submission of a research dissertation
- Publication of one original research paper
General Qualifications and Prerequisites
- Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) is required, though 3.5 or higher is preferred
- GRE General Test scores of 1300 (combined) or higher for the Verbal and Quantitative sections, and 4.5 or higher on the Analytical Writing section, are preferred
- GRE Subject Test (Biology, Chemistry or Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology) is suggested, but not required; score of 650 or higher preferred

GRE - GRADUATE RECORD EXAM
Results of the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) are required for all applicants. Test scores must be received by the application deadline date. Applicants should allow six to eight weeks from the test date for the reporting of scores to the institution. Applications will not be considered without GRE scores. ENGLISH PROFICIENCY: TOEFL / IELTS
All applicants are required to demonstrate a level of proficiency in the English language sufficient to meet the admission requirement of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Proficiency can be demonstrated by the receipt of a bachelor's or advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the United States or from a university where English is the primary language of instruction (please note that applicants receiving degrees at universities in U.S. territories, such as Puerto Rico, are required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS unless the primary language of instruction at the institution is English). All other applicants must achieve at least a minimum score on either the TOEFL or IELTS test. Test scores must be received by the application deadline date.
