The Visiting Researchers program at Georgetown University has been established to accommodate the increasing number of scholars who wish to use the faculty and facilities of Georgetown University for research purposes. The University extends its resources on a selective basis in the spirit of institutional collegiality and to foster the further development of knowledge. Preference is given to senior scholars and researchers, with permission granted occasionally to junior faculty or advanced graduate students from other institutions pursuing dissertation research.
Visiting Researchers mustidentify an academic contact in a specific department related to their research. Researchers are provided with a University identification card (GoCard), the use of the Georgetown University Library system, and other privileges. Because of limited space, offices are not available to Visiting Researchers. Visiting Researchers also have the opportunity to audit courses informally with the instructor's permission.
For Visiting Researcher purposes, the semesters are as follows:
- Fall: From the first day of Fall registration (usually in late August) to the Friday preceding Spring registration (usually in mid-January)
- Spring: From the first day of Spring registration (usually in mid-January to June 1)
- Summer: From June 1 to the Friday preceding Fall registration (usually in late August)
Because Georgetown's faculty and physical resources are already in heavy demand, the University must be selective in granting access to its facilities and a per-semester fee is charged for this privilege. Visiting Researchers who will extensively use faculty consultation time, library resources, campus facilities and other services will be charged $1,000 per semester for the 2007-2008 academic year. Those Researchers who require limited institutional services for their research activities will be charged $250 per semester for university affiliation. The Graduate School and the academic unit with which the Researcher will be affiliated will determine the assigned fee level. All Visiting Researchers will be charged $250 for the summer term. Beyond the fee charged by the Graduate School, some individual departments or programs may charge an additional affiliation fee. Where Visiting Researchers provide academic services to or resources for the host department or program, the department or program may request a fee waiver.
