Theses & Dissertations
All doctoral students, or students in a master's program who are required or opt to write a thesis, must file a Thesis or Dissertation Proposal Form with the Graduate School prior to defending the thesis or dissertation and preferably in the first semester of Thesis Research. The form should outline the proposed topic and method of study and include a preliminary bibliography. If the research involves human subjects, the student is required to follow the procedure for obtaining approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and to indicate the IRB-C approval number on the Thesis or Dissertation Proposal Form.
Students should consult the Guidelines for Dissertation and Thesis Writers before beginning the thesis or dissertation and should adhere to these formatting and procedural requirements during its preparation. Following these guidelines will ensure successful submission of the thesis or dissertation to the Graduate School and timely award of the degree. In addition, students should review the overview documents for submission of Electronic Theses and Dissertations: How? and also Electronic Theses and Dissertations: Why?
Doctoral students, and master's students who are required to orally defend their theses, must submit a Thesis Reviewers Report to the Graduate School. This form must be signed by the student's advisor and committee members (faxed or electronic signatures are acceptable) and is due one week prior to the scheduled oral defense.
Doctoral dissertation defenses open to the academic community, and are listed on the Doctoral Defense webpage which is found at: http://grad.georgetown.edu/pages/doc_dissert_defense-sche.cfm. Doctoral students must submit a Doctoral Dissertation Defense Schedule Form to the Graduate School no later than one week in advance of the scheduled date of the oral defense.
Before final submission of the thesis or dissertation to the Graduate School, the student should obtain the signatures of his or her advisor, committee members, and Director of Graduate Studies on the appropriate Thesis Coversheet. The Thesis Coversheet must be printed on 25 percent bond paper. Students are required to electronically submit their thesis or dissertation electronically. Students will receive a confirmation once successfully submitted and again when the Graduate School has approved and accepted the thesis or dissertation. Students will pay the processing fee by credit card directly to ProQuest at the time of submission. The processing fee is $55 for a master’s thesis, $65 for a doctoral dissertation, $150 for optional open access for a master’s thesis, or $160 for optional open access for a doctoral dissertation including optional copyright.
Students should also submit the Survey of Earned Doctorates form, which asks for information that is collected for statistical purposes. Information about the Survey of Earned Doctorates can be found at http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/doctorates. The ETD Release Form gives Georgetown and its agents the non-exclusive, worldwide right to reproduce, distribute, display and transmit the thesis or dissertation in electronic formats.
Theses and dissertations must be accepted by the Graduate School before the end of the last business day of the month in which the degree is to be awarded, except for the month of May, in which they are due no later than the first business day of May.
Further information about these requirements may be found in the Graduate Bulletin and questions may be directed to the Graduate Student Services staff.
