The Wenner-Gren Foundation
The Wenner-Gren Foundation provides the following funding in support of anthropological research:
- Conference Grants: Grants for amounts up to $15,000 are available to the organizers of conferences. Priority is given to public conferences sponsored by international scholarly organizations (for example, the IUAES and EASA) that serve as their annual or periodic meetings and to working conferences that address broad research issues in anthropology (rather than region-specific) and provide for intensive interaction among participants. Deadline: application due by June 1st and December 1st, annually.
- Dissertation Fieldwork Grants: Awarded to individuals to aid doctoral dissertation or thesis research. Applicants must be enrolled for a doctoral degree. Application must be made jointly with a thesis advisor or other scholar who will undertake responsibility for supervising the project. Awards are contingent upon the applicant's successful completion of all requirements for the degree other than the dissertation/thesis. Applications may be submitted before such requirements have been met; however, should an award be approved, the foundation will at that time request evidence of that the applicant is "all-but-dissertation/ advanced-to-candidacy". Qualified students of all nationalities are eligible. Deadline: applications due by May 1st (for funding beginning the following January 1st) and November 1st (for funding beginning the following July 1st). Only one application may be submitted during any twelve-month period.
- Historical Archives Program: The objective of this program is to encourage the preservation of unpublished records and other materials of value for research on the history of anthropology. HAP grants (maximum $15,000) are offered for two purposes: 1) to assist individuals holding significant records and personal papers with the expenses of preparing and transferring them for archival deposit; and 2) to aid oral-history interviews with senior anthropologists. Deadline: There is no fixed deadline. Inquiries and application will be reviewed as they are received.
- International Collaborative Research Grants: Grants for amounts up to $30,000 are available to assist anthropological research projects undertaken jointly by two (or more) investigators from different countries. These grants are renewable for a second period of research. The purpose of the program is to encourage new collaborations in which the principal investigators bring different and complementary perspectives, knowledge, and/or skills. Priority is given to new collaborations, but an independent project within a larger, long-term collaboration can be considered. Projects must involve at least one principal investigator from outside the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Australia, or New Zealand. Both investigators must meet the qualification for Post-Ph.D. Grants (i.e., holding the doctorate or equivalent in anthropology or a related discipline). Deadline: preliminary inquiry due by June 1 and December 1, annually.
- Post-Doctorate Grants: Awards of up to $25,000 for scholars holding doctorate or equivalent qualification in anthropology or a related discipline. Application for post-Ph.D. grants may be made by the scholar either as an individual or on behalf of an organization. Deadline: applications due by May 1st (for funding beginning the following January 1st) and November 1st (for funding beginning the following July 1st). Only one application may be submitted during any twelve-month period.
- Richard Carley Hunt Postdoctoral Fellowships: limited number of non-renewable fellowships with a maximum of $40,000 to aid in the write-up of research results for publication. Applicants must hold the Ph.D. at the time of application. Deadline: applications due by May 1st (for funding beginning the following January 1st) and November 1st (for funding beginning the following July 1st). Only one application may be submitted during any twelve-month period.
- Workshop Grants: Grants for amounts up to $10,000 are available to the organizers of workshops. Generally smaller than conferences, workshops focus on defining or developing topics for further research. Priority is given to workshops focusing on what basic research in anthropology can say to important public issues. Deadline: preliminary inquiry required by June 1st and December 1st, annually.
