This fellowship awards up to two years of graduate study in the professions and academic disciplines at any institution of higher learning in the U.S. The fellowships are funded by a trust established by Paul and Daisy Soros and created in recognition of the contributions of New Americans to American life and in gratitude for the opportunities the U.S. has afforded to the donors and their families.
In order to qualify, a candidate must:
- be a 'Green Card' holder, a naturalized U.S. citizen, or the child of naturalized parents;
- be no older than 30 years of age as of November 1, 2006;
- demonstrate the relevance of graduate study to their long-term career goals and potential to contribute to society; and
- give evidence of at least two of the following three attributes:
- creativity, originality, and initiative, demonstrated in any area of the candidates life;
- a capacity for accomplishment, demonstrated through activity that has required sustained effort and drive; and
- a commitment to the values expressed in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Thirty fellowships are awarded each year; for the 2005 competition over 1,100 applications were received. A Fellow receives a maintenance grant of $20,000 per year, as well as a tuition grant of one-half the cost of tuition. Additional information may be found on the Soros' web site.
