The McNeil Center for Early American Studies

The McNeil Center for Early American Studies (MCEAS) at the University of Pennsylvania offers the following pre- and post-doctoral fellowship opportunities:

  • MCEAS Pre-doctoral Dissertation Fellowship:  support for dissertation projects focusing on North America and the Caribbean before1850 and relying on research in Philadelphia-area archives and libraries.  Deadline:  March 1, 2008

  • The E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Fellowship in Early American Religious Studies:  support for projects focusing on any aspect of religion in North America in the Atlantic world before 1850.  Deadline:  TBA

  • Barra Postdoctoral Fellowship:  support for a nine-month period beginning September 1, 2008 through May 31, 2009.  Includes a stipend of at least $40,000, health insurance (if not covered by the home institution), private office, and other.  This competition is open to both junior and senior scholars in History, Literature, Art History, African American Studies, American Studies, Anthropology, Economics, Folklore, Gender Studies, Law, Music, Political Science, Religious Studies, Urban Studies, Women’s Studies, or any other relevant discipline, but all candidates must have the Ph.D. in hand by September 1, 2008.  All McNeil Center fellows are expected to be in residence during the academic year and to participate in the Center's program of seminars and other activities.  Deadline:  November 1, 2007
