Health Systems Administration

Introduction

http://healthsystems.georgetown.edu/

The Department of Health Systems Administration offers a program of study leading to a Master's degree in Health Systems Administration. Organizing, financing, and managing high-quality health services that are accessible and affordable to all Americans is one of our society's greatest challenges. Public needs and expectations are high and resources are limited. An aging population increases the need for chronic and long-term care. Infectious diseases emerge that were rare or unknown just a few years ago. Better technologies displace old ones, but increase costs and require personnel with new skills.

In improving the quality of life in the community, the management of health systems plays a major role. Health systems management comprises many interwoven careers: medicine and public health, policy, finance, economics, general management, human resources management, and public relations.

Georgetown' s unique, broad systems approach provides the management and health foundation for a career in health maintenance organizations, health insurance companies, integrated health service systems, hospitals, nursing homes, community health centers, home health agencies, medical group practices, and mental health services. Graduates also aim for careers in federal, state, and local government agencies, health management consulting, professional associations, and the full range of businesses that supply and support the health services system. The health services management and leadership skills learned at Georgetown are needed at all levels and by units of all sizes throughout these organizations.

The health care field is continually changing. The Georgetown program provides the foundation for career-long professional development to meet both changing needs and expanding opportunities. We are affiliated with MedStar Health, a major comprehensive not-for-profit health care system that is available to provide internships, research opportunities, and mentorship. We teach a course in managerial health ethics, the only one of its kind, taught by faculty from Georgetown's renowned Center for Biomedical Ethics.
