Deadlines: August 1, 2008
- Fulbright Senior Specialist Program: the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program is designed to provide short-term academic opportunities (two to six weeks) for U.S. faculty and professionals. Specialists roster candidates are limited to one Specialists grant per calendar year. Applications for the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program are accepted on a rolling basis, and peer review of applications is conducted eight times per year. Please visit their site for a list of relevant disciplines, scholar eligibility requirements, eligible countries, and other useful program information. The honorarium is payable upon completion of the grant and submission of an online final report and travel expense report. Host institutions normally cover in-country per diem costs for lodging, meals and transportation. Single institutions or consortia of institutions may obtain proposal forms and instructions from the CIES website. U.S. citizenship required. Deadline: accepted on a rolling basis.
- : the 2005 "Direct Access to the Muslim World" program will enable American colleges, universities and community colleges to enrich their international programs and courses of study by providing opportunities for direct access and intensive exposure to specialists from Muslim communities in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia, and several countries in Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. This Fulbright program will promote knowledge of values and societies of the Muslim world as a basis for mutual communication and understanding, and lay a foundation for educational development and expanded institutional exchanges between institutions in these regions and the United States.
Eligible U.S. Higher Educational Institutions: For calendar year 2005, the "Fulbright Visiting Specialists Program: Direct Access to the Muslim World" will support up to 40 grants for visits of between two and six weeks by scholars and professionals from abroad to American higher educational institutions that desire to enrich understanding and knowledge of Islamic societies and cultures. Proposals will be accepted from liberal arts institutions, minority-serving institutions and community colleges with limited or no current programs on the Muslim world, as well as from established area studies programs that could benefit from a specialist in a particular subject.
Duties of Fulbright Visiting Specialists: Fulbright Visiting Specialists will have extensive teaching experience in their home countries, will be mid-to-senior level professionals/professors, will be familiar with communities and higher education institutions in the United States and will be fluent in English. Their activities will engage institutions and communities to promote dialogue, learning and mutual understanding and to develop continuing courses, programs, exchange activities and relationships that are sustainable after the Fulbright Visiting Specialist’s departure. They may present lectures or short courses, team-teach with American colleagues, or assist in program and curriculum development in colleges and universities and speak to community groups, service clubs, and religious and school groups. Participants may be from the disciplines of arts, business, communications and journalism, education, humanities, law, library science and social sciences. Research projects or teaching of languages will not be supported.
Proposal Preparation: Proposals from U.S. higher educational institutions to host a Fulbright Visiting Specialist will be reviewed by external reviewers who are primarily university professors with intimate knowledge of international education. Upon approval for funding, the U.S. higher educational institution will be matched with a scholar approved by a Fulbright office abroad. Proposals should indicate the discipline of the person they wish to invite, but need not name a particular individual. Institutions that wish to name a former Fulbrighter are invited to search the Fulbright Directory of Visiting Scholars.
Grant Coverage: Fulbright grants will include air travel, per diem and an honorarium. Preferences are given to the institutions which include in-kind contributions as part of their support of scholars, such as office space, local travel, computer usage, guest faculty housing, and/or meal services.
Submission: Programs for Fulbright Visiting Specialists will be carried out throughout calendar year 2005. Single institutions or consortia of institutions may obtain proposal forms from the CIES website for either an institutional or individual application. Deadline: are due April 1, 2008
