Extramural Research
The Graduate School's Grants Administrators, in cooperation with the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) and Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) in the Office of Alumni and University Relations (OAUR), are available to assist with the pre- and post-award processes and to provide support for faculty seeking extramural research funding. OSP offers consultation to faculty seeking external support as well as assistance with proposal preparation and submission. CFR assists faculty with all steps of the proposal submission process to corporate, foundation and association sponsors, i.e. Philanthropic Funders. Similarly, the Grants Administrators provide guidance with preparing the proposal for review and submission to OSP, and subsequently work collaboratively with that office to ensure that the application is in the appropriate format for submission to the sponsor; the Graduate School also works closely with CFR, as appropriate, on specific submissions to corporate and foundations sponsors.
In general, requests for support to federal and public agencies and private corporations and foundations are most likely to be funded if the applications respond accurately and completely to the RFPs, program interests and/or the specific guidelines set forth by the funding entity. Thus, Main Campus faculty and administrators are encouraged to contact any of the three aforementioned offices, as appropriate, to discuss their research and funding needs. Moreover, faculty and administrators are also strongly encouraged to register with the Community of Science (COS) to request funding information from over 400,000 different private and public entities.
Georgetown University's Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) is available to provide the necessary support and expertise to those wishing to pursue extramural funding. OSP offers a variety of services to faculty including external grant consultation, electronic access to computerized databases containing sources of research funding, and direct links to web sites of a number of public and private grant-making institutions. Moreover, they also are available to answer questions relating to the budget preparation process as well as negotiate the indirect cost (IDC) rate on behalf of the principal investigator and the University. Please refer to their web site for a complete list of services as well as whom to contact for assistance.
Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) in the Office of Alumni and University Relations (OAUR) is available to assist faculty with all steps of the proposal submission process to corporate, foundation and association sponsors, i.e. Philanthropic Funders. Their primary functions include:
- guideline requirements and proposal development (marketing);
- and prospect research;
- identifies corporations and foundations for faculty and administrators that have interests in university programs and projects;
- assistance with proposal writing and editing as well as budget preparation (in cooperation with OSP when appropriate); and
- establishes relationships with corporations and foundations in an effort to advance university goals.
Additionally, CFR is solely responsible for clearance to approach all corporations, foundations and associations on behalf of Georgetown and therefore should be the first point of contact on these initiatives. This policy is in place so that CFR will know of pending major grants/gifts that may be jeopardized by an unsolicited proposal. The policy also allows CFR to manage proposal submissions for those philanthropies that restrict the number of proposals that may be received from an institution during the calendar or fiscal year; for the majority which accept multiple submissions, CFR works to increase the likelihood of success for all. For those interested in obtaining extramural funding, the Graduate School's Grant Administrators, William Betterman and Susan Lim, of the Science Research Administrative Service Center, and Maria Snyder, who supports faculty and graduate student research in the Humanities and Social/Behavioral Sciences, are available to provide guidance on matters of external support. Specifically, Maria is able to: facilitate research funding for the faculty on the Main Campus by offering proposal and budget preparation; conduct specialized funding searches; liaison with the various University administrative and research offices on behalf of the PI; and assist PIs with the various electronic application systems required by many government and private agencies and foundations. Furthermore, Ms. Snyder also is available to support the department/center administrators and PIs with post-award processes, particularly as they relate to the financial management of the grant or award. Please visit the Science Research Administration Service Center web page for information on the support provided by Mr. Betterman and Ms. Lim.
The Graduate School has an annual membership with the Community of Science, "the leading global resource for hard-to-find information critical to scientific research and other projects across all disciplines." On a weekly basis, the Graduate School (vis a vis Maria Snyder) receives information regarding new funding opportunities in the social sciences and humanities from all sorts of funding venues -- be they federal, private, non-profit, or academic; these announcements are included on the "Grants and Fellowships" page. For those wishing to receive more specific funding information, we encourage you to visit the site to create your own personalized "Research Workbench," which will generate a "funding alert" sent to you via e-mail or to your "workbench" and which caters to your research interests/trajectory. There is no fee for this service for Georgetown faculty and graduate students on the Main Campus. For more information or questions, please contact Maria Snyder for guidance, or visit the COS site.
