The DAAD is (co-)sponsoring the following competitions:
- Graduate Scholarship for Study/Research in Germany: for study and research at universities or research institutes in Germany. Scholarship provides funds for study and/or research in Germany for a period of seven to ten months between October 1, 2008 and July 31, 2009. Master's and Ph.D. candidates, as well as recent Ph.D's, in all disciplines with the exception of dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine are eligible to apply. Applicants must be nominated by the Graduate School (see below). Deadline: six copies of the application materials due by October 12, 2007 to the Graduate School; by November 1, 2007 (in the fields of music, visual arts and performing arts) and November 15, 2007 (outside the fields of music, visual arts and performing arts) to DAAD
Nomination Process: Six copies of all application materials (one copy of transcripts and recommendation letters) should be submitted to the Graduate School (Attn: Maria Snyder), ICC 302 by October 12, 2007. Application materials will be reviewed by a committee of faculty in accordance with the criteria (enclosed in the program announcement) of selection employed by DAAD. While there is no cap on the number of applications that Georgetown may submit, the faculty review will be rigorous and confined to written materials only. Additional information regarding this program may be found on the DAAD's web site.
- German Studies Research Grants: program is designed to encourage research and promote the study of cultural, political, historical, economic, and social aspects of modern and contemporary German affairs from an inter- and multidisciplinary perspective. Highly-qualified undergraduate and graduate students need to be nominated by their department/program chairs. The grant may be used for short-term research in either North America or Germany. Eligibility requirements:
- Master's level graduate students in the humanities and social sciences earning a certificate or working on a project in German Studies may be nominated for the grant by their department and/or program chair. Applicants are expected to have completed a minimum of three courses in German Studies (literature, history, politics, or other fields) at the time of nomination.
- Doctoral degree students in the humanities and social science disciplines in the process of preparing their dissertation proposals on modern German topics may be nominated. Students whose dissertation proposals have already been formally accepted are not eligible for nomination. The intent of the program is to provide an opportunity for short-term exploratory research to determine the viability or to delimit the scope of their proposed dissertations. The program is not intended to supplement or substitute for regular dissertation field work abroad which should lag the short-term research stay by at least one semester.
All applicants are expected to have completed two years of college level German language studies. Grants are restricted to citizens of the United States who are enrolled full time at the university that nominates them. Deadline: application materials due November 1, 2007 and May 1, 2008
