The APS offers the following research grant and fellowship opportunities for faculty and graduate students (as noted):
- The Franklin Research Grants: offers small grants to scholars in order to support the cost of research leading to publication in all areas of knowledge. It is particularly designed to help meet the cost of research-related travel to libraries and archives as well as to offset various research-related costs such as: the purchase of microfilm, photocopies or equivalent research; the costs associated with fieldwork; or laboratory research expenses. These grants are not made for research for commercial purposes, or when government support is more appropriate. They are not intended to meet the expenses of attending conferences, or costs of publication. Deadline: October 1, 2007 for a January 2008 decision for work beginning after Feburary 2008; December 1, 2007 for a March 2008 decision for work beginning after April 2008.
- The John Hope Franklin Dissertation Fellowship: to support an outstanding African-American graduate student attending any Ph.D. granting institution in the United States, in any field of knowledge. There is no residential requirement. Candidates must have completed all course work and examinations preliminary to the doctoral dissertation and be prepared to devote full time for twelve months—with no teaching obligations—to research on their dissertation projects or the writing of their dissertations. Award: $25,000 stipend for a twelve-month award period, and $5,000 to support the cost of residency in Philadelphia. Deadline: April 1, 2008
- Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research: encourages exploratory field studies for the collection of specimens and data and to provide the imaginative stimulus that accompanies direct observation. Applications are invited from disciplines with a large dependence on field studies, such as archeology, anthropology, astrobiology and space science, biology, ecology, geography, geology, and paleontology, but grants will not be restricted to these fields. Open to graduate students, postdoctoral students, junior and senior scientists, and social scientists who wish to participate in field studies for their theses or for other purposes. Award: up to $5,000. Deadline: February 15, 2008
- Library Resident Research Fellowship: offers short-term residential fellowships for conducting research in its collections. The Society’s Library, located near Independence Hall in Philadelphia, is a leading international center for research in the history of American science and technology and its European roots, as well as early American history and culture. The Library does not hold materials on philosophy in the modern sense. Open to both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals who are holders of the Ph.D. or the equivalent, Ph.D. candidates who have passed their preliminary examinations, and independent scholars. Award: stipend is $2,000 per month, and the term of the fellowship is a minimum of one month and a maximum of three, taken between June 1, 2006 and May 31, 2007. Deadline: March 1, 2008 (expected)
- Phillips Grants: provides grants for research in Native American linguistics, ethnohistory, and the history of studies of Native Americans, in the continental United States and Canada. Grants are not made for projects in archaeology, ethnography, psycholinguistics, or for the preparation of pedagogical materials. The grants are intended for such costs as travel, tapes, films, and consultants' fees but not for the purchase of books or permanent equipment. Graduate students are eligible to apply. Awards: up to $3,000. Deadline: March 1, 2008
- Sabbatical Fellowships: open to mid-career faculty who have been awarded sabbatical/research leave, but with only partial salary. Candidates must not have had financially supported leave since September 1, 2005, and they must have received their doctoral degrees no later than 2000 and not earlier than 1987. Twenty fellowships will be awarded at a stipend of $30,000 - $40,000. Tenure of the fellowship is for the academic year 2008-09 or for the calendar year 2009. Deadline: October 15, 2007
