Application Procedures
- The Application Requirements Checklist should be used to prepare your application for submission. Click on the Checklist to review the basic requirements for admission to all graduate programs.
- Review the website information for your program of interest, including degree and certificate offerings, specific program admission requirements, and application deadlines. All materials submitted in support of the application must be received by the published application deadline.
- Prepare to take required examinations at least one month prior to the published application deadline. Request that test results be sent to Georgetown University via our institution code (department codes are not required).
- Request official transcripts from all schools attended. Ideally, official transcripts should be sent to you in sealed and signed envelopes prior to the application deadline. When all official transcripts are received by you, they should be self-assembled unopened in a packet for mailing to the designated admissions office. Please note that applications to multiple programs or joint/dual programs will require copies of official transcripts for each program of application.

What Documents and Fees are Submitted Online?
- Online Application Form
- Application Fee
- Supplemental Program Data Forms
- Statement of Purpose
- Resume
- Writing Samples
- AMCAS Reports (for the Special Master's program)
- Unofficial Transcripts
- Official Recommendations
The online application and uploaded electronic documents will be submitted directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions via a secure, online process. Your online submissions are considered to be official documents and no paper copies are required or desired.
Tips for Submitting a Successful Online Application:
-
DO NOT send documents submitted online in duplicate via hard copy format. Processing paper versions of electronic documents delays the processing of the application and the updating of the online application checklist. Copies of resumes on "resume paper" or printouts of writing samples are neither necessary nor desired. Transcripts are the only documents which should be submitted both within the on-line application and through the mail.
-
DO self-assemble all hard copy official transcripts and corresponding translations that will be mailed to the designated admissions office. Self-assembly of these unopened documents will significantly speed up the processing time of your application. Please note the applications to multiple programs or joint/dual programs will require copies of official transcripts for each program of application.
-
DO send the application fee with your application. The Graduate School requires that an application fee accompany any application to one of our graduate programs. We do not waive fees. Applicants will not receive a Graduate School decision on their application if the application fee is not paid.
-
DO NOT send cash, foreign currency, or wire transfers as a form of payment of the application fee. Only credit cards, checks, and money orders are considered to be acceptable forms of payment. The most direct form of payment is through credit card transaction during the online application process. Checks and money orders (payable in U.S. dollars) are also accepted by following the instructions for payment during the online application process.
-
DO review all application requirements for you program of interest. Some departments and programs may have application requirements that are in addition to standard Graduate School requirements. Items such as supplemental data forms, language proficiency forms, and specific writing sample requirements are detailed in the Admissions section under your program on interest in the Online Graduate Catalog. Please review this section to make certain you fulfill all standard and supplemental admissions requirements and application deadlines. Official test scores must be requested from the appropriate testing organizations, if required. All required application materials must be received by the designated application deadline.

Special Issues: Applying to Joint / Dual or Multiple Programs
You may apply to several programs or departments using one single application form; however, applicants who wish to apply to more than one program, including applicants to joint / dual degree programs, must submit an application fee and any hard copy official transcripts for each program to which you are applying. (For example, an applicant to the M.A. program in Security Studies / Ph.D. program in Government must submit two application fees and two copies of each transcript requested.) To avoid an incomplete application, multiple copies of official transcripts must be submitted when applying to more than one program.
When filling out the on-line application, you should select your joint program of interest only once. For example, if you are applying to the M.A. program in Security Studies / Ph.D. program in Government, you do not need to select the reverse program in the second program selection box. Doing so will cause double applications to each program, as well as the charge of additional application fees.
Please note that some joint / dual programs may have specific requirements about the types of official recommendations or personal statements that are submitted by the applicant. Ideally, these documents should address the candidate's fit for the joint program, whether it be a dual Master's, a Master's / Ph.D. degree, or joint degree with another Georgetown School.
Please refer to the list of approved joint/dual degree programs for specific joint degree offerings. Applicants who submit materials for joint/dual graduate programs with the Medical School, Law School, and MBA program should complete the application process for both the Graduate School and the corresponding Medical / Law / MBA program.
Check Receipt of Your Materials Online
When you apply online, you have convenient access to an electronic checklist detailing what application items are received or not received. Application items received are logged daily. Online recommendations are automatically updated to a status of "Received" when submitted by the recommender.
Look to see what materials have arrived at our offices by viewing your online checklist by logging back in to your online application. During our high volume December - March application season, please allow up to two weeks for processing of your materials.
Applicant Responsibility
It is the responsibility of the applicant to make certain that all admission materials are received by the designated application deadline. Online applicants may access an online application status checklist to determine which items have been received in support of the application. Self-assembly of hard copy credentials into one application package for mailing facilitates the expeditious handling of the application packet. Neither the Graduate School nor the departments can assume the responsibility of informing the applicant about erroneous or missing materials.
All materials (original, photocopied, or electronic documents) submitted in support of an application become a part of Georgetown University application records and cannot be released to the student or a third party.
If application materials are forged, falsified, or altered, the Graduate School will notify all relevant officials, including the individual or institution issuing the document(s) and, as appropriate, immigration officers. Submission of such materials will disqualify an applicant for admission.
If you applied to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences within the last year and would like to reapply to the same program, you must submit a Request to Reactivate Form. Your request must be received by the application deadline date for your program of interest. On the form, you will indicate your program and term of interest. Additionally, you will need to submit one updated letter of recommendation, an updated Statement of Purpose, and an application reactivation fee of $75.
Note: Application materials of non-matriculated applicants are destroyed twelve months after the date of receipt, unless a deferral of admission has been officially requested and approved.
