The American Academy in Rome Annual "Rome Prize"

Situated on Rome's highest hill, the Janiculum, the   is a center that sustains independent artistic pursuits and humanistic studies.  Each year, through a national competition, the is awarded to (working in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Design, Historic Preservation and Conservation, Literature,* Musical Composition, or Visual Arts) and  pre- and post-doctoral (NEH and Academy) fellowships (working in Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and early Modern, or Modern Italian Studies) for a period of six months to two years.  Rome Prize winners reside at the Academy's eleven-acre center in Rome and receive room and board, a study or studio, and a stipend:  $11, 500 for six-month fellowship or $23,000 for a fellowship of up to eleven months.  Applicants must be U.S. citzens at the time of application; foreign nationals may apply to the NEH post-doctoral fellowship with the caveat that they have resided in the U.S. for the three years preceding the application.
