The AHA sponsors the following competitions for both members and non-members (as specified):
Gutenberg<e> Prize: each prize consists of a $20,000 fellowship to be used by the author for converting the dissertation into an electronic monograph of the highest quality to be published by Columbia University Press. One prize is reserved for a dissertation or first-book manuscript by an independent, public, or part-time scholar (a historian who does not have full-time employment in an institution that supports research). A panel of distinguished scholars in the field judge the dissertations. Submissions are judged primarily on the scholarly mertis of the dissertation. Deadline: Competition suspended until further notice.
Fellowships:
- The J. Franklin Jameson Fellowship in American History: cosponsored by the AHA and the Library of Congress. Fellowships are awarded annually to support significant scholary research in the collections of the Library of Congress by scholars at an early stage in their careers in history. Ph.D. degree or equivalent required; applicants must have received the degree within the last five years, and must not have published or had accepted for publication a book-length historical work. The fellowship will not be awarded to complete a doctoral dissertation. This one-semester fellowship currently carries a stipend of $5,000 and requires residency at the LOC for at least three months. Deadline: TBA
- The Fellowship in Aerospace History: supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The fellowship annually funds one or more research projects for six months to one year. Proposals of advanced research in history related to all aspects of aerospace, from the earliest human interest in flight to the present, are eligible, including cultural and intellectual history, economic history, history of law and public policy, and history of science, engineering, and management. Open to applicants who hold a doctoral degree in history or a closely related field, or who is enrolled in and has completed all course work for a doctoral degree-granting program. The stipend is $20,000. Deadline: TBA
Research Grants (AHA Members Only):
Only AHA members are eligible to apply for these grants. All grants are offered annually and are intended to further research in progress. Preference is given to advanced doctoral students, non-tenured faculty, and unaffiliated scholars. They may be used for travel to a library or archive; microfilming, photography, or photocopying; borrowing or access fees; and similar research expenses.
