Award, Funding & Publishing Opportunities

For those applying to foundations or corporations, please notify the appropriate offices prior to submitting either a Letter of Intent or a proposal.  This will facilitate coordination and tracking of proposals by the Office of Sponsored Programs.

Faculty & Student Awards

Faculty:

Denise Brennan, associate professor of anthropology, was awarded a 2008-09 grant from the Guggenheim Foundation for her book project on human trafficking.

Michael Kazin, professor of history, was awarded an NEH Faculty Research Fellowship for the AY 2008-09 academic year.

Charles McNelis, an associate professor in the Classics department, was awarded a Loeb Classical Library Foundation fellowship for the 2008-09 academic year.

Joanne Rappaport, a professor in the Spanish and Portuguese department, was awarded a Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies Fellowship to spend the 2008-09 academic year at Harvard to conduct research and writing her new book.

Henry Richardson, professor of theology, was awarded an NEH Faculty Research Fellowship for the AY 2008-09 academic year.

Cristina Sanz, a professor in the Spanish and Portuguese department, is the recipient of a small grant from the Spencer Foundation.  The grant will support research and data collection for her new project.

Alex Sens, Joseph Durkin, S.J. Professor and chair of the Classics department, was awarded a Loeb Classical Library Foundation travel grant.

Current and Former Graduate Students:

Kevin D. Boyd was selected for a 2008-09 Study Scholarship Abroad with the German-American Academic Exchange (DAAD), which provides a cost-of-education tuition scholarship and living expenses to pursue graduate studies at a German university.  After some thought, however, Kevin has decided instead to pursue a master's degree in Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies (CERES), for which he was awarded a full tuition scholarship.

Lauren Fleming is the recipient of a 2008-09 Charlotte W. Newcombe Dissertation Fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation.  Lauren, a doctoral candidate in Philosophy, will be writing on "The Normativity of Personal Commitments."

Jingsong Huang (Ph.D, Chemistry), Linda Merola (Ph.D., Government) and Sara Scalenghe (Ph.D., History) were awarded the 2008 Harold Glassman Dissertation Award within their respective subfields.  For additional information, please visit our Glassman Dissertation Awards page.

Shervin Malekzadeh was awarded dissertation fellowships from the Smith Richardson Foundation and the Spencer Foundation for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years, respectively.  A doctoral candidate in comparative politics (Government department), Shervin will be writing a dissertation on religion and education in Iranian madrasas.

Curtis Gordon Murphy was awarded a Department of Education Fulbright-Hays DDRA (Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad) award for AY 2008-09; he also was awarded an IREX fellowship to cover another aspect of his field research.  A doctoral candidate in the History department, he will be conducting field research in Poland and the Ukraine over the course of the coming academic year.

Sara R. Nimis, a doctoral candidate in history, was awarded a U.S. Dept of State Bureau of Education & Cultural Affairs (ECA) Fellowship for Doctoral Research through the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE), as well as a Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA) II fellowship, which will provide three tutorials and a provision for travel to Egypt for the period, January-May 2009.

Clara Scholl , a doctoral candidate in the Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience (IPN; Med Ctr), was awarded a 2008-09 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.  The award provides up to three years of tuition and research support.

Dominique Shure was awarded a DAAD Study Scholarship Abroad, which will provide her with a cost-of-education tuition scholarship and living expenses to pursue a graduate studies at a German university during the AY 2008-09.  Dominique is a 2008 graduate of the BSFS program.  Additionally, Dominique also was awarded a 2008-09 J. William Fulbright award to conduct research in Germany, where she will study education policies and the assimilation of Turkish children at schools in Berlin’s 12 districts.

Hoda Yousef , a doctoral candidate in history, was awarded an American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) dissertation fellowship for eight months of research in Egypt for the 2008-09 academic year.
